Profile of Sam Wilmott

Markup Languages -- Programming Languages          Experience, Insight and Innovation


Sam Wilmott is an innovator and implementer of programming languages and markup languages.  He is widely recognized for his accomplishments and insights in the markup language and textual data processing fields.

Sam used early line-printer output markup languages at University, starting in 1969, and went on to develop wide experience in computer text processing, from the pre-SGML, print publishing days through to the highly automated and networked environments of the present.

Significant accomplishments include:

The theme throughout Sam’s education and work has been the central role of languages in both information processing and human communication -- programming languages, markup languages, proprietary data formats, graphical user interfaces and even human languages.

Sam’s education specialized in programming language design and implementation, as well as in the use of English.  He has an Honours B.Sc. and an M.Sc. in Computing Science from the University of Alberta, and a B.A. (English Literature) from Carleton University.

Apart from work, Sam is an avid reader, enjoys swimming regularly, is active in his church, and is looking forward to further developing his skills as a bell ringer.
